  • Predict the impact of climate-related events on the entire community and the need for leaders to take a Whole Community Approach.
  • Integrate climate and community-specific threats and hazards into the Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA) process.
  • Identify the disproportionate impacts of climate risks on underserved and disadvantaged communities.
  • Conduct a vulnerability assessment using screening and mapping tools while identifying populations with the highest risk from climate-related hazards.

Description:

This course provides participants with a forum to discuss and determine culturally relevant and self-determined methods for improving resilience. Participants will gain knowledge into available resources, tools, frameworks, and resilience indicators such as FEMA’s Resilience Analysis Planning Tool, Climate Risk and Resilience portal, and resilience frameworks.

Tribal responders, emergency managers, government department heads, leaders, public health, community-based organizations, business leaders.

  • Discuss changes that are impacting Tribal Nations.
  • Determine framework, methods, and resources for enhancing community resilience.
  • Determine long-term vulnerability reduction actions that could strengthen community resilience.

Description:

This course teaches Tribal Nations, Emergency Managers, Community Resilience Planners and alerting personnel, effective communication of climate and weather-related risks tailored to address community needs, distinguish underserved populations and people with access and functional needs within their communities, and collaborate with trusted organizations.

  • Recognize underserved communities within the whole community and use strategies to tailor risk communications.
  • Describe the importance of understanding the changing risk profiles among underserved populations and disadvantaged communities.
  • Evaluate risk communication strategies for mitigation, response, and recovery activities to ensure more equitable outcomes among the whole community
  • Prepare effective risk communication messages to reach the whole community
